Marc Cucurella Criticizes Chelsea's Management Policy, Opposes Enzo Maresca's Departure
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has criticized his club's management policy and recent technical decisions, believing the team paid the price for a lack of experience in their recent UEFA Champions League clash against French side Paris Saint-Germain.
In an exclusive interview with "The Athletic," the left-back explained that the 8-2 aggregate defeat was difficult to comprehend, while also expressing his clear opposition to the decision to sack coach Enzo Maresca mid-season.
Commenting on the coaching change, Cucurella affirmed that Maresca's departure last January had a significant negative impact on the team's stability. The defender stated: "Such a change is better left until the end of the season, to give everyone, from players to the new coach, enough time to prepare and go through a full pre-season." He emphasized that he would not have made the decision to dismiss Maresca if it were up to him, given the team's need for continuity at the time.
Regarding the reasons for the continental loss, the Spanish player cited a lack of experience as a key factor in their European elimination. He explained that many of his teammates were playing a match of such magnitude for the first time in their careers. Cucurella elaborated, saying: "We lacked experience; for many players, this was the first time they played a game of this size, and we paid the price." This came amid a decline in results during Liam Rosenior's tenure after Maresca, when the team lost six of their last 12 matches.
This criticism comes in Cucurella's fourth season with Chelsea. He joined the club after the ownership transition to Todd Boehly in May 2022 and extended his contract last summer until 2028.
It is worth noting that Maresca was dismissed from his position just six months after leading the London club to the Club World Cup title last July, raising questions about the timing of the coaching change and its direct impact on the club's ambitions.
