UEFA Fines Celta Vigo €24,500 Over Fan Incidents in Lyon
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has imposed a fine of €24,500 on Spanish club Celta Vigo following fan misconduct last week at Groupama Stadium in Lyon during a Europa League match.
These sanctions directly address incidents observed inside the stands during the game, which included the throwing of objects and the use of illegal means to disrupt the match atmosphere.
The continental body detailed the breakdown of the fine: €15,000 for throwing projectiles from the visiting supporters' section, an additional €8,000 for the use of a laser pointer, and €1,500 for lighting pyrotechnics.
Approximately 3,000 fans traveled to support the team, but individual incidents led to these additional financial costs for the club's treasury.
Celta Vigo officials stated that efforts are currently underway to strengthen control mechanisms and prevent a recurrence of such incidents in the future, especially as the club has previously faced sanctions from La Liga due to fan chants at their home stadium, Balaídos.
On the other hand, UEFA's decisions did not include any sanctions related to clashes that occurred outside the stadium between extremist factions of both teams' supporters, which resulted in a Spanish club fan sustaining stab wounds several hours after the match concluded.
