Czech Authorities Arrest Dozens in Widespread Match-Fixing Raids
Czech police arrested dozens of individuals on Tuesday as part of a wide-ranging investigation into a football match-fixing scandal. The operation involved extensive raids across the country.
The Czech Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that these arrests were made in coordination with the Organized Crime Unit, following years of official complaints from the Czech Football Association regarding suspicions of corruption and bribery linked to sports betting.
The Czech Football Association revealed that 47 individuals are currently facing disciplinary investigations as a result of these developments, which have shaken the local sports community. In this context, David Thronde, President of the Czech Football Association, stated: "We will do our utmost to ensure the betting mafia disappears from Czech sport." These measures aim to protect the integrity of competitions, which have been affected by suspicions across the top four leagues down to youth categories, according to media reports.
These developments come just two days before the Czech national team is scheduled to face Ireland in Prague, as part of the final stage of World Cup qualifiers.
As security investigations continue, the local football association is striving to contain the fallout from the scandal, which erupted at a sensitive time preceding playoff matches. The pursuit of those allegedly involved in the manipulation network, whose influence extended for several years before authorities intervened based on data provided by football bodies, is ongoing.
