Neymar Expresses World Cup Desire: "It's Not Up to Me, I'll Always Be a Brazil Fan"
Brazilian star Neymar da Silva of Santos acknowledged that his participation in the upcoming World Cup with the Brazil national team is not directly within his control. Doubts about his inclusion in the squad have grown, particularly following his subdued performance during his team's 1-1 draw against Corinthians in the Brazilian League.
The network quoted Neymar, who told reporters in Santos in a frustrated tone: "I want to return to the national team and play in the World Cup, but this matter is not up to me. Whether I am there or not, I will always remain a fan of Brazil."
Neymar is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 79 goals. Two upcoming friendly matches against France and Croatia in the United States represent the final tests before coach Ancelotti announces the definitive World Cup squad next May. The tournament is scheduled to take place between June 11 and July 19.
Ancelotti had previously stated that he would only rely on players who are 100% fit for the tournament, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. However, he also indicated that some players do not require additional tests, a sentiment that keeps Neymar's hopes alive for a spot in the final squad, despite his confirmed absence from the upcoming two friendlies.
Neymar sustained an ACL injury in October 2023, followed by another knee surgery in December. This year, he has featured in fewer than ten matches for Santos. Despite his limited appearances, he has shown glimpses of the quality he can offer the national team, notably entering Santos's all-time top ten scorers list in February after netting a brace against Vasco da Gama.
