FIFA Confirms Ongoing Contact with Iran Regarding 2026 World Cup Participation
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has confirmed its continued regular communication with all member associations participating in the 2026 World Cup finals, including the Iranian Football Federation, to ensure the smooth progress of tournament preparations. In an official statement, FIFA indicated that current discussions are centered on organizational and logistical aspects, reaffirming the international body's commitment to the match schedule officially adopted on December 6, 2025.
These official developments follow a period of uncertainty surrounding Iran's participation, stemming from military tensions in the Middle East and subsequent reports of Tehran's desire to change its match venues. FIFA clarified its position, stating: "The International Federation of Association Football is in constant contact with the Islamic Republic of Iran and other partners to discuss World Cup planning, and we look forward to seeing all teams compete according to the previously scheduled dates."
Mehdi Taj, President of the Iranian Football Federation, revealed that his country is actively negotiating with FIFA to play its first-round matches in Mexico instead of the United States, citing public safety concerns. Taj stated: "Since Donald Trump publicly declared his inability to guarantee the security of our national team's delegation, we do not intend to go to the United States." This position is influenced by statements attributed to the former US President, which have raised concerns within the Iranian delegation regarding available security measures.
The upcoming World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, presenting significant coordination challenges for the organizing bodies to ensure the participation of all qualified teams without political or security impediments. While Iran continues to press for adjustments to its World Cup travel itinerary, FIFA underscores the importance of adhering to the pre-determined schedules and locations to prevent any disruption to the structure of the world's largest tournament.
