Premier League Fines Chelsea, Imposes Suspended Transfer Ban
The Premier League has fined Chelsea FC £10.75 million and imposed a one-year transfer ban, suspended for two years. As part of the same sanctions, the club is also prohibited from signing academy players for nine months, following its self-reporting of millions of pounds in secret payments made between 2011 and 2018.
An examination conducted by new owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022 uncovered unlawful payments made to agents and individuals via offshore companies. The current management promptly informed football authorities in England and UEFA of these findings, demonstrating a desire to address the club's past financial legacy and avoid more severe legal repercussions.
The investigations scrutinized transfer deals involving prominent players such as Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto'o, and Andreas Christensen. The Premier League stated in an official announcement that "undeclared payments were made by parties connected to the Club to players, unregistered agents and third parties." The League further noted that "these payments were not accounted for in the Club's official accounts and were not disclosed to the regulatory authorities," which the Premier League deemed a breach of its duty to act in good faith.
This decision follows a previous settlement with UEFA in July 2023, when the club paid £8.64 million for financial reporting breaches. Although some of these cases were time-barred under continental bodies' regulations, Premier League rules allowed for the current sanctions as there is no time limit for investigating such infringements. The London club has officially agreed to accept the imposed fine and penalties.
