Italian Referees' Committee Confirms Manganiello's Error in Not Awarding Inter Milan Penalty
Senior officials from the Italian Referees' Committee have confirmed a significant officiating error by referee Gianluca Manganiello during the match between Inter Milan and Atalanta. A technical review of the game concluded that his decision not to award a clear penalty to Inter player Davide Frattesi, following a challenge from Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, was incorrect. The committee deemed that this decision directly impacted the flow and outcome of the match.
The incident occurred in the 36th minute of the second half, but the refereeing team did not award a foul. The technical review revealed contact similar to situations that have previously resulted in penalties. Criticism also extended to VAR official Alberto Gariglio, who remained silent and did not intervene to correct the on-field decision or advise the referee to review the incident.
Based on these assessments, referee Gianluca Manganiello, who hails from Pinerolo, has been placed on mandatory rotation by the refereeing authorities. He is expected to be sidelined from officiating matches for the current period, before returning to his duties after the upcoming break. There is also a possibility that his future assignments may be distributed between Serie A and Serie B competitions.
