Chelsea Coach Hints at Transfer Strategy Shift, Champions League Focus
Chelsea manager Liam Roseneer has revealed a potential shift in the club's transfer strategy for the upcoming summer window, indicating a possible move away from their recent policy of focusing solely on young players. Roseneer clarified that discussions with sporting directors and owners are ongoing, while his immediate focus remains on finishing the current season as strongly as possible to secure qualification for the Champions League. He considers this crucial for the club's standing and its competitiveness in the transfer market.
The coach emphasized that participation in the continental competition is a fundamental pillar for attracting major signings. Roseneer stated, "Qualifying for the Champions League is absolutely vital for our standing as a big team, and for what we aspire to do in the transfer market to compete at the highest levels. This is the minimum a club of this size should strive for." With the team currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, the manager believes it is not the right time to delve into the details of new recruits, asserting that his current task is to ensure a strong finish to the season. He also noted that discussing summer transfers in March is unwise.
Over the past four seasons, Chelsea has relied on attracting promising young talents, resulting in the youngest squad in the domestic league with an average age of 23.5 years. However, new directions could provide the team with greater balance and experience. Roseneer further elaborated on his vision for the future, saying, "We are working on developing experience here, and next summer you will see the results," indicating that the club is undergoing a growth phase. These statements come after Chelsea faced difficulties in European competition, following their 5-2 first-leg loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16.
