Portuguese FA Suspends Mourinho for Two Matches; Benfica Calls Sanction Unfair
The Disciplinary Committee of the Portuguese Football Federation has imposed a two-match suspension on Benfica coach José Mourinho. This decision follows his dismissal and involvement in an altercation with Porto assistant coach Lucho González during last Sunday's "Clássico" match.
Under this ruling, the sanctions include a one-match ban for kicking the ball, in addition to an 11-day suspension for the verbal exchange with González. As these penalties cannot be served concurrently, the Benfica coach is set to miss his team's next two matches against Arouca and Vitória on March 21.
The incident began when Mourinho left his technical area to kick the ball towards the Porto bench in celebration of his team's goal. The situation escalated into a verbal confrontation where Mourinho used provocative gestures and phrases towards González, who responded by calling the coach a "traitor." Consequently, González also received a one-match suspension and an eight-day ban for his involvement in the incident.
For its part, Benfica announced its intention to appeal these decisions to defend its coach, stating: "The sanctions are unfair and unjustified." These tensions arise amidst Mourinho's history with rival club Porto, whom he previously led to win the UEFA Champions League title in 2004.
