Uncertainty Surrounds Iran's 2026 World Cup Participation 100 Days Before Kick-off
The Iranian national team's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals has been cast into doubt just 100 days before the global tournament is set to begin. This uncertainty arises amid escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran, following recent coordinated attacks launched by Washington and Israel. These developments raise questions about the team's ability to play its scheduled matches in American cities, despite pre-arranged schedules for the premier football event.
Mehdi Taj, Iran's top football official, expressed deep skepticism regarding the team's future in the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Taj stated, "What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot expect to look forward to the World Cup with hope." These remarks reflect growing concern, especially given that the Iranian national team's matches are scheduled to take place in the American cities of Inglewood and Seattle. This further complicates the situation at a time when no qualified team has withdrawn from previous editions of the World Cup in 75 years.
The Iranian national team, ranked as the second-highest in Asia, has been drawn into a group alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. However, the current circumstances could hinder their preparations for the tournament, which will feature 48 teams for the first time, an increase from the previous 32. Meanwhile, FIFA has not issued any official response regarding the participation of Iranian officials in a workshop held in Atlanta this week. Preparations continue for the competition's opening match on June 11, which will see Mexico face South Africa in Mexico City.
