Arthur Melo Leads Grêmio in Gaúcho Championship Final After Years in Europe
Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo has re-established himself as a key player for Grêmio since his return on loan last summer from European football. The 29-year-old has become a pivotal figure in the squad of the club where he began his career, starting eight of the nine available matches this season, demonstrating his physical and technical readiness.
Melo expressed his feelings about returning to Porto Alegre, stating: "Being at Grêmio is a return home, the place where everything began. I developed a lot during my years in Europe with clubs like Barcelona and Juventus, but coming back here remains very special." The Brazilian international has been delivering impressive playmaking performances, boasting a 95% passing accuracy. This has bolstered the confidence of coach Luís Castro, who expressed admiration for the player's abilities, emphasizing that his consistent presence in the starting lineup reflects the significant technical value he adds to the team. Melo also noted that he is currently enjoying the competition and performing well.
The former Barcelona, Juventus, and Fiorentina player is now looking to lead Grêmio to the Gaúcho Championship title in the highly anticipated clash against traditional rivals Internacional, stressing the importance of this triumph early in the year. Melo explained: "I want to win again with Grêmio. The Gaúcho Championship is a special and very important competition, and we will fight for it. I hope I can lift the trophy again as one of the team's leaders because that would be amazing."
This return follows a significant European career that included spells at Spanish club Girona and Italian side Fiorentina, after his departure from Grêmio in the summer of 2018, where he had helped secure the Copa Libertadores for the third time in the club's history. The player hopes to continue his upward trajectory, having finished the Brazilian league as the team's most accurate passer with a 94% success rate, as he aims to regain the brilliance he displayed before his professional journey to the Old Continent.
