After Inter's Elimination... Barella Attacks New Champions League Format: "Phantom Penalty Denied Us Qualification"
Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella expressed his frustration following his team's early exit from the Champions League, highlighting the significant impact a "wrong" refereeing decision can have.
Speaking after another defeat to Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt, Barella stated: "This is the difference when you don't qualify directly for the Round of 16, all because of a single point lost due to a phantom penalty awarded in the 90th minute (against Liverpool). That decision prevented us from finishing the league phase among the top eight teams."
The Italian midfielder added: "We could have avoided two playoff matches and the arduous long journey to Norway. But this is football in the new Champions League format."
Inter was eliminated from the Champions League after suffering two surprising defeats in the playoff round against Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt, who secured victories both home (3-1) and away (1-2).
Inter had entered the playoff round after finishing tenth in the league phase. Barella's statement referenced the penalty awarded to Liverpool in the sixth matchday, which secured a victory for the English side. Had that match ended in a draw, the "Nerazzurri" would have guaranteed direct qualification without the need for playoffs.
