Pape Gueye on Senegal's Muted Celebration After Diaz Penalty Miss: 'The Game Wasn't Over Yet'
Pape Gueye, a player for the Senegalese national team, revisited the "unfortunate" events of the Africa Cup of Nations final, when Senegal's players decided to leave the field in protest against a penalty awarded to the "Atlas Lions".
The scorer of the winning goal conducted an interview with Spanish radio station "Cope," and regarding the moment Senegal's players left the field, he said: "We found what happened to be unfair. We believed the decision was not just, so we all headed to the changing room. Afterwards, Sadio Mané told us: 'Let's finish the match.'"
The Spanish Villarreal player added: "Did we want to leave the changing room or not? I was on the field with Mané, and I don't know what happened between them in the changing room. After our goal, the referee didn't go to VAR, but when Brahim missed the penalty, we told ourselves that was the right moment."
Senegal's players did not celebrate after Brahim Diaz missed the penalty, and Gueye commented on this: "We didn't celebrate because the match wasn't over yet, and we had to maintain our focus to secure the win."
