Real Madrid Fans Protest Florentino Pérez Over Xabi Alonso's Departure
Santiago Bernabéu Stadium witnessed significant protests from Real Madrid fans against President Florentino Pérez, despite the team's 2-0 victory over Levante today. The demonstration included raising banners calling for Pérez's resignation, widespread booing, and the traditional 'pañolada' – the waving of white handkerchiefs – directed towards the presidential box.
These protests were primarily fueled by the departure of coach Xabi Alonso, whom supporters consider a reference point for the club. Alonso left the club by "mutual agreement" despite having a three-year contract until June 2028. Real Madrid had paid a transfer fee of 12 million euros to Bayer Leverkusen to secure his services, in addition to a net annual salary of 8 million euros.
Fans believe that Alonso "did not receive the promised support" and "was unable to bench certain players or freely impose his views." These protests highlight what supporters perceive as a deviation from Pérez's previous firm decisions regarding prominent figures like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, and Iker Casillas, and a failure to uphold his principle that "no one is above the club."
