Senegal Coach: 'Local Coaches in AFCON Semifinals Exceptional, Deserve Real Recognition'
Senegal national team coach Pape Thiaw affirmed that the progression of four national teams led by African coaches to the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals is an exceptional achievement. He stated that this milestone reflects the development of football on the continent and the growing confidence in national expertise.
Speaking at the press conference ahead of the anticipated semifinal clash against Egypt, Thiaw emphasized that the current accomplishment deserves praise. He said, "The current result deserves real recognition for local coaches. The presence of coaches leading their national teams in this advanced stage is exceptional."
Regarding the recurring media discussions about salaries and financial aspects, the "Teranga Lions" coach stressed that this topic does not concern him greatly. He affirmed that his focus is entirely on the team's best interests. "You talk about salaries, but I don't like to talk about money, and I've always said that. My personal situation is not important," Thiaw stated.
Thiaw added in a firm tone, "What's most important today is Senegal. We will do everything in our power to bring the national team back to the top and elevate it very high, because this is our duty to our country and our people."
Pape Thiaw concluded his remarks by reaffirming his great confidence in his players and their fighting spirit, considering that belief in the project and teamwork are the keys to success in such major encounters.
It is worth noting that the AFCON 2025 semifinals feature three local coaches: Pape Thiaw (Senegal), Walid Regragui (Morocco), and Hossam Hassan (Egypt). Mali's Eric Chelle, meanwhile, leads the Nigeria national team.
