“Sorcerer” Arrested in Mali for Alleged €33,000 Fraud, Promising AFCON Victory Over Senegal

A bizarre case has sparked widespread controversy in sporting and public circles in Mali after authorities arrested an individual who presented himself as a "sorcerer" or "diviner." He is accused of fraud, claiming he could guarantee the national team's qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

According to Malian media, the individual exploited the public's enthusiasm surrounding Mali's participation in the continental tournament. He promoted on social media and within his local community his possession of "spiritual powers" that would allow him to influence match outcomes. This was in exchange for financial donations, which he claimed would be used for "special rituals" to help the team reach the semi-finals.

The same sources added that the diviner managed to collect significant sums of money from a number of citizens, estimated at over 33,000 euros (equivalent to more than 36 million Moroccan centimes). His situation became complicated after Mali's elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals against Senegal, which sparked a wave of anger among the donors who felt they had been deceived.

Fans attacked the "sorcerer's" home before security authorities intervened after receiving official complaints. The individual was arrested and placed in custody pending the completion of investigations. He faces charges related to fraud, exploiting the "naivety" of citizens, and spreading misleading claims.

It is worth noting that the Malian national team exited the Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage following their 1-0 defeat to Senegal last Friday.
