Regragui Matches Mardarescu and Renard with Five AFCON Wins for Morocco
Walid Regragui, head coach of the Moroccan national team, has matched the records of the most prominent coaches in Morocco's Africa Cup of Nations history, following the national squad's victory over Tanzania yesterday in the tournament's round of 16.
Regragui reached this milestone after securing five victories, drawing level with Virgil Mardarescu, the coach who led the Moroccan national team to the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations title, as well as Hervé Renard.
According to "Stats Foot," a website specializing in statistics, Regragui's victories include two matches in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Moroccan team defeated Tanzania 3-0 in the group stage and Zambia by a single goal. In the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the national team triumphed over Comoros 2-0 and Zambia 3-0, before advancing to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win against Tanzania in the last 16.
Walid Regragui is now poised to potentially surpass Renard's and Mardarescu's records in the future, especially with the opportunity presented by facing the Cameroon national team in the upcoming quarter-finals of the current tournament.
