Pérez Settles Scores with La Liga and Barcelona: "Spanish Refereeing Level Unacceptable!"... Confirms Legal Action Against UEFA
On Sunday, Florentino Pérez opened the General Assembly of Real Madrid members, using the opportunity to launch an unprecedented attack on La Liga President Javier Tebas, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), Barcelona over the Negreira case, and the Spanish refereeing system.
Regarding the lawsuit against UEFA over the Super League, Pérez stated: "We are not against everything; we only oppose what is illegal or unethical. It is neither natural nor legal to prevent clubs from organizing their own competitions. It is not natural for UEFA to try to control our destiny and impose competition formats that harm fans. No one can punish us; clubs are free, as stated in the latest ruling (from the regional court). We have the right to claim billions of euros in damages and the right to create our own competition, and I assure you we will pursue both rights. It is not natural for watching football to become increasingly expensive in the 21st century."
Criticizing Tebas and La Liga regarding the proposed Miami game, Pérez said: "It is not natural for the La Liga president to want to impose a match in Miami, an idea that doesn't even seem natural to Barcelona captain Frenkie de Jong himself. Nor is it natural for the league to support Barcelona and Villarreal receiving additional financial injections simply for playing in Miami. Tebas compares that match to organizing an NFL-style game in Miami, even though his project was a failure. The NFL game was legal, compliant with competition rules, and had everyone's support. The situation is completely different; their attempt didn't even have UEFA's support. It was nothing more than a losing bet. It is also not natural for La Liga officials to earn six times what their counterparts in the Premier League earn."
Pérez also criticized the refereeing system in Spain and Barcelona, stating: "The level of Spanish refereeing is also unacceptable. It is a shame that FIFA did not select any of the 35 Spanish referees to officiate international matches. Of course, it is also unacceptable that Barcelona paid, for whatever reason, more than 8 million euros to the Vice President of the Referees Committee for at least 17 years. He held important positions, and this period, incidentally, coincides with Barcelona's best results in our country."
