Lamine Yamal Tops List of Players Facing Most Racist Abuse in Spain at 60%
A new report from the Spanish Observatory Against Racism and Xenophobia (Oberaxe), cited by the newspaper AS, reveals that Barcelona star Lamine Yamal leads the list of players most subjected to racist insults on social media in Spain. Yamal accounts for 60% of all recorded racist abuse directed at players.
Vinicius Junior ranked second with 29%, followed by France's Kylian Mbappé at 3%. Nico and Iñaki Williams, Alejandro Balde, and Brahim Díaz collectively share 2% of these insults.
Tomás Fernández, Director of the Spanish Observatory Against Hate, stated in an interview with the "Carrusel Canalla" program that insults directed at Yamal frequently include racist slurs. He added that Yamal's skin color and origins make him a recurring target for ethnic hate speech.
The report also highlighted the clubs most affected by this type of discourse: Real Madrid (34%), followed by Barcelona (32%), Real Valladolid (17%), Valencia (8%), Athletic Bilbao (6%), Real Sociedad (5%), and Atlético Madrid (4%).
Fernández confirmed that this phenomenon intensifies during major matches like "El Clásico," where terms such as "monkey," "dirty black," and "go back to your country" are used, specifically targeting players like Lamine, Balde, Raphinha, Vinicius, Brahim, and Mbappé.
