Messi to Lead MLS All-Stars Against Liga MX Selection
Major League Soccer (MLS) has announced the selection of Argentine star Lionel Messi, Inter Miami forward, to captain the first MLS All-Star team participating in the 2026 All-Star Game. The league stated in an official release that this match will pit the elite players of MLS against a team comprising the top stars from Mexico's Liga MX, aiming to enhance athletic competition between the two leagues in the continent.
The match is scheduled for July 29 in Charlotte, United States, at Bank of America Stadium, home of Charlotte FC. Alongside Messi, the selected squad features international names including South Korea's Heung-min Son and Honduras' Andy Najar, as well as Chicago Fire forward Hugo Cuypers, who currently leads the MLS scoring charts with 13 goals.
This selection comes amidst Messi's preparations with the Argentine national team to defend their title at the FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The Argentine team aims to retain the trophy they won in Qatar 2022, further enhancing the significance of Messi's presence in major football events hosted in the region in the coming period.
