Ireland Captain on Facing Israel: "It's a Difficult Situation and Should Never Have Been Put on Us"
Ireland captain Seamus Coleman commented on his country's national team being drawn into a group with the 'Zionist Entity' in the UEFA Nations League, affirming that he would support any player who refuses to play the match for ethical reasons.
In a media statement, Coleman was asked whether players should have been consulted on the issue. He responded: "No, it should never have reached the players. The matter should have been dealt with long before we were asked about it. I think it's very difficult for players, especially younger players, to be asked to comment on it."
He continued: "We live in a different world today, and young players in England have their own issues and concerns. This doesn't mean they are unaware of what's happening, but times have changed, and I believe it's important that older players like myself are asked these questions."
When asked if he would support a player who objected to playing against the 'Zionist Entity', he clarified: "Absolutely. As I told you moments ago, we represent our people, and the stances of our footballing nation reflect the feelings of the people. The opinion of the Irish people on this issue is strong, and we also represent these people. Therefore, our situation is extremely uncomfortable."
He added: "I sit here before you as a father, a son, a husband, and a brother, and I grew up knowing what is right and what is wrong. It's a very difficult situation, and it should never have been placed on us. But in the end, we are just like you, and every human being has a heart and feelings."
