Olympique Marseille Plunged into New Internal Crisis Over Benatia-Coach Rift
French media reports have revealed significant tension in the relationship between Olympique Marseille's Moroccan sporting director, Medhi Benatia, and Senegalese coach Habib Beye, amidst the club's ongoing crisis this season.
According to French newspaper "La Provence," the relationship between the two parties has visibly deteriorated in recent weeks. The club's atmosphere has shifted from high ambitions at the start of the season to a state of tension and disappointment due to poor results both domestically and in European competitions.
Marseille had entered the season with considerable aspirations following a strong transfer window and qualification for the Champions League. However, the team has failed to meet its objectives, both in Ligue 1 and in the European competition, from which they exited disappointingly.
The same source added that Benatia is deeply disappointed with Habib Beye's performance, especially since he was instrumental in appointing him as coach after his departure from Rennes. Conversely, the Senegalese coach reportedly makes no secret of his frustration with Benatia's frequent interventions in technical matters. Reports suggest Beye dislikes the sporting director's involvement in tactical choices and even the starting lineup.
The newspaper also clarified that Habib Beye was not behind some recent team decisions, including the closed training camp that preceded recent matches, as well as the disciplinary action taken against player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang due to his conduct.
Despite these reports, Olympique Marseille has denied any direct conflict between Benatia and Habib Beye, asserting that the atmosphere within the team remains normal.
Both parties are expected to depart the club at the end of the season. Reports suggest that the incoming management has new visions for the sporting project, which may not include the Senegalese coach. Benatia had previously announced his own departure from the club at the end of the current season.
