Real Madrid TV Labels La Liga a 'Farce,' Accuses VAR of Bias
Real Madrid's official television channel launched a fierce attack on the Spanish League (La Liga) association, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, and the match broadcasting mechanism following the team's two-goal defeat to Barcelona in the Clasico. The official channel accused the footballing system of bias against the Royal Club, claiming that VAR only intervenes in controversial situations to deliberately harm the team.
Commentators on the official channel used harsh terms to describe the Spanish League, expressing their protest against refereeing decisions. Real Madrid TV commentators stated: "The Spanish League is not serious; it's Tebas's League and Negreira's League. What is happening is a circus, a farce, and a scandal, and the broadcast of matches is a disgrace." The channel also highlighted an incident where Jude Bellingham was struck by an elbow from Eric Garcia without a foul being called. The commentators remarked: "This is an elbow from Eric Garcia, a clear foul that warrants a red card."
The channel also criticized the operation of VAR technology, which it deemed selective in its interventions. Real Madrid TV commentators said: "In every controversial moment, VAR intervenes when it suits it, and when does it intervene? It only intervenes to harm Real Madrid." In this context, the channel expressed its dissatisfaction with the overall production quality of La Liga matches throughout the season, noting that viewers were deprived of television replays for certain moments that required scrutiny, such as an incident involving Kylian Mbappé.
These scathing criticisms come amidst a difficult sporting period for the club, as the recent defeat resulted in them finishing a second consecutive season without a major title. This has deepened the frustration towards the management system of Spanish competitions and the bodies responsible for broadcast quality and refereeing fairness on the field.
