Sandro Schärer Appointed Referee for PSG vs. Bayern Munich Clash
UEFA has announced the appointment of Swiss-German referee Sandro Scharer to officiate the first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich next Tuesday at the Parc des Princes. This marks the first time the 37-year-old referee will take charge of a match at this advanced stage of the continental competition, despite his consistent presence in European tournaments.
Scharer brings extensive experience to European pitches, having officiated 19 Champions League matches. This includes two games involving Paris Saint-Germain, one of which was their dominant 4-0 victory over Atalanta at the start of this season's league phase. His continental record also features a red card shown to Lyon player Corentin Tolisso during a Europa League quarter-final, a match that saw the French team stumble against Manchester United, highlighting the referee's assertiveness in major fixtures.
Despite his competence, Scharer has faced previous criticism from Olivier Létang, president of Lille OSC. In March 2025, Létang accused him of lacking impartiality due to speaking German with Borussia Dortmund players. Olivier Létang stated, "When the referee's appointment was announced and I saw he was Swiss-German, I found it strange, as he was speaking exclusively in German with the Dortmund players during halftime." Following this complaint, UEFA decided not to open any disciplinary proceedings against the Swiss referee, reaffirming its support by entrusting him with this highly anticipated top-tier match.
