Ligue 1 Implements Extensive Calendar Changes Following PSG and Strasbourg's European Success
The French Professional Football League (LFP) has announced official adjustments to the schedule of the final rounds of the domestic competition for the current season. This decision follows Paris Saint-Germain's success in reaching the Champions League semi-finals and Strasbourg's qualification for the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League, necessitating a reorganization of dates to ensure optimal conditions for French clubs in their continental participations.
The new adjustments include moving Ligue 1 Matchday 33 games from Saturday, May 9, to Sunday, May 10, with eight matches set to kick off simultaneously. Similarly, Matchday 34 competitions have been shifted from their previous date of May 16 to Sunday, May 17, maintaining the unified broadcast system for nine matches, all starting at 9:00 PM.
The League also reported that the Lens vs. Nantes match (Matchday 33) has been brought forward to Friday, May 8. May 13 has been set as the date for the two postponed Matchday 29 fixtures: Brest vs. Strasbourg and Paris Saint-Germain vs. Lens. Relatedly, changes have extended to Ligue 2, where Matchday 34 kick-off times have been postponed from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 9.
Reports anticipate that these schedule updates will lead to the postponement of the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) awards ceremony, as the new dates clash with the original program for the annual event. These steps are part of ongoing coordination between organizing bodies to ensure domestic competitions proceed in alignment with clubs' commitments in the advanced stages of European tournaments.
