Lavezzi Reveals Battle with Depression and Path to Recovery
Former Napoli striker, Argentine Ezequiel Lavezzi, has revealed he went through a difficult period marked by severe depression and anxiety attacks, which began in late 2023. The retired player explained that he engaged in self-harming behaviors during that dark phase before deciding to seek professional help and turn to a specialized clinic for necessary treatment, confirming that he is now on a positive path to recovery.
Lavezzi spoke candidly about his harsh experience, considering seeking help as the most important step in his journey. The player stated, “I knew darkness, and I was harming myself and those around me. I was moving between depression and anxiety attacks, and I was never conscious; my mind was full of negative thoughts.” The Argentine star also noted that the support of his wife and family was a fundamental pillar in confronting these health challenges, stressing the importance of not hesitating to consult specialists when facing mental health issues.
Lavezzi, who now sees himself as a more conscious and mature person, reported that the birth of his second child contributed significantly to the improvement of his psychological state and the restoration of his balance. In this regard, he said, “Thanks to the support of my wife and family, I relied on psychiatrists and other specialists in a clinic.” He added in his statements, “I went through a difficult period, but I'm fine now.” These statements reflect a transformation in the player's life, who decided to share his experience to raise awareness among others about the dangers of neglecting mental health.
It is worth noting that Lavezzi announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34 after a distinguished career that saw him shine for Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine star described the Italian club as the place he loved most during his sporting career, which concluded with an experience in Chinese football before he made the decision to permanently step away from playing.
