Insigne: "I Was Ready to Walk Back to Napoli... I Offered to Play for €1,500 a Month"
Italian player Lorenzo Insigne has officially announced his return to football by signing with Pescara, a club in Italy's Serie B. This move comes after a six-month hiatus since his departure from Toronto FC last June.
The 34-year-old forward's return brings him back to the club where he previously shone under coach Zdeněk Zeman, helping the team achieve promotion to Serie A.
Insigne disclosed details of his prior attempts to rejoin his former club, Napoli, before finalizing his deal with Pescara, emphasizing his readiness to make significant financial sacrifices to wear the Partenopei shirt once again.
“I was ready to walk back to Napoli, and to wear that shirt again. I offered to play for the minimum salary, which is 1,500 euros per month,” Insigne stated.
The player also stressed his loyalty to the club where he spent 12 years, explaining that as a fan, he was delighted by their Serie A title win last season.
The Italian star touched upon his previous experience in Major League Soccer, describing his time with Toronto FC as difficult and frustrating, both professionally and psychologically.
Insigne joins Pescara at a time when the team is struggling with poor results, currently sitting in last place in the league table. This places the responsibility on him to lead the attacking line and help improve the club's standing.
This return puts an end to speculation surrounding the player's future, as he had been without a club since parting ways with the Canadian team last summer, now returning to competitive football in Italy with the aim of regaining his renowned form.
