Senegalese Pape Gueye: "We Are African Champions and I'm Not Ready to Return My Medal"
Senegalese midfielder Pape Gueye has once again spoken about the Africa Cup of Nations final, making controversial statements.
Gueye affirmed that Senegal considers itself the champion of Africa without a doubt, despite the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) decision to declare the "Teranga Lions" defeated 3-0 and award the title to Morocco.
In an interview with L'Equipe newspaper, the player stated: "Do we feel like champions? Yes, of course, because we are simply African champions. We won that match on the field, and the whole world saw it."
He added: "It's true that there were events that affected the course of the match, including the stoppage, but the game eventually resumed."
Gueye also addressed the topic of medals, emphasizing his attachment to his, despite sarcastic remarks made by his teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye about potentially returning them. He said: "No, that was just a joke! I told him I'm not ready to return my medal."
The player admitted that leaving the field was not the ideal action, but he justified it by the immense pressure and the feeling of injustice during a final of such magnitude.
