Fan Dies Before Mexico vs. Portugal Match on Azteca Stadium Reopening Night
Mexico City witnessed an unfortunate incident last Saturday when a fan died before the start of the friendly match between Mexico and Portugal, which ended in a 0-0 draw. The game was held to celebrate the reopening of the iconic Azteca Stadium, which will host the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Cup after undergoing nearly two years of renovations.
Mexican rescue services reported that the supporter passed away before kickoff. Initial information indicated that the victim, a 27-year-old man, suffered a fatal fall.
According to Reuters, the man attempted to jump from the second floor of the VIP boxes to the first floor. While climbing the facade, the man, who security officials stated was intoxicated, fell to the ground level.
Security forces and forensic medical services immediately rushed to the scene to examine the facts and open an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
