FIFA President Gianni Infantino called for calm regarding Mexico's hosting of 2026 World Cup matches, following a wave of violence in the country attributed to the killing of drug gang leader "El Mencho".
Speaking in Barranquilla, Colombia, the FIFA president made his first public comments on the matter, stating: "The situation is very calm, and everything is fine. The 2026 World Cup will be a fantastic tournament."
Mexico will co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Canada. The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19.
In recent hours, Mexico experienced a period of chaos and violence, particularly in Guadalajara, one of the host cities for the World Cup matches. This unrest followed the killing of drug trafficker "El Mencho" in an operation carried out by the Mexican army.
