Javier Tebas and Vincent Labrune Clash Over French Football Governance
Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, has criticized the governance system within the French Professional Football League (LFP), directing sharp criticism at its decision-making mechanisms and the distribution of international rights. In a press interview, Tebas pointed to conflicts of interest and what he described as erroneous decisions, including the reduction of Ligue 1 clubs to just 18. This provoked a strong reaction from the French side, which urged the Spanish official to address issues in his own domestic stadiums.
Tebas called for comprehensive reforms within the French league to address what he termed administrative imbalances. The La Liga president stated, "We must start by cleaning up the French league by improving governance rules, avoiding conflicts of interest, and correcting issues that I believe are wrong, such as the decision to reduce the league and the method of distributing international rights, which only go to clubs playing in Europe." He also questioned the viability of launching the "Ligue 1+" platform, criticizing the direction taken by Paris Saint-Germain officials, which he deemed not to serve the interests of French football.
In response, Vincent Labrune, president of the French Professional Football League, urged Tebas to focus on the affairs of his domestic competition instead of interfering in external matters, asserting that French football governance is not the Spanish official's concern. Labrune clarified in a statement, "We invite Mr. Tebas to focus on topics directly relevant to his leagues, and in this regard, the repeated racist incidents occurring in Spanish stadiums are serious, unacceptable, and deserve the full attention of the Spanish football authorities."
In a related development, reports indicate that seven Ligue 1 clubs, including Stade Rennais, have signed a petition aligning with Javier Tebas's proposed reforms, suggesting internal division over current policies. This media confrontation is part of a series of previous disputes involving Tebas, who is known for his frequent clashes with club presidents and sports officials, most notably Joan Laporta, president of Spanish club Barcelona.
