Qatar Sports Investments Plans NBA Team Acquisition in Paris
Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), the primary shareholder of Paris Saint-Germain, intends to submit a formal bid to the NBA to acquire a team in the league's prospective European competition in Paris. This move, spearheaded by Nasser Al-Khelaifi, aims to solidify the group's presence in the French capital through an independent investment arm, working to develop the club's global brand presence.
A spokesperson for the Qatari fund clarified that current efforts focus on the company's role as a direct investor. The spokesperson stated, “It is not Paris Saint-Germain Football Club bidding for a basketball team, but Qatar Sports Investments as an investor seeking to establish a team in the city of Paris.” They further confirmed that QSI is “actively involved in the bidding process,” which aligns with the company's expansionist vision.
These developments coincide with the NBA's announcement last year of its intention to launch a European competition in 2027 in partnership with FIBA. March 31 was set as the deadline for submitting financial bids for interested parties. Sources indicate that the Qatari group has held consultations with Paris and Levallois clubs to explore future collaboration opportunities.
Negotiations for the acquisition of the new team are expected to take at least a full year, according to estimates from sources close to the matter. Qatar Sports Investments continues to explore avenues for integration into the evolving European sports landscape, capitalizing on the desire of major sports organizations to expand beyond their traditional boundaries.
