Flick After Copa del Rey Exit: "We Are Disappointed But Proud; Players Gave Over 100%"
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed his pride in his players' performance following their elimination from the Copa del Rey, noting they gave more than 100% effort. He also admitted that involving Pedri was a risk, but fortunately, the player did not suffer any harm.
Speaking at the press conference following their 3-0 second-leg semi-final victory over Atlético Madrid, Flick stated: "We are disappointed, but we are also proud of what we saw. It was a great match, and we created many chances, but in the end, what we wanted didn't happen."
Regarding the reinforcement of his coaching philosophy, the coach explained that they held intensive discussions with the team in the dressing room after the two defeats against Atlético Madrid and Girona, confirming that the team responded well. He said: "Everyone was fantastic; Bernal was amazing, and Cubarsi's performance puts him among the best defenders in the world. This is the spirit I want from the players. It was a great match."
As for whether this was the best match of the season and if the team could win the league and the Champions League, Flick emphasized the importance of focusing on each step individually. He stated: "Step by step, the road is long in the league and the Champions League. We must focus on what's next, which are two matches against Bilbao and Newcastle, both very strong teams. I can say I am proud of my team's players."
Regarding the impact of the significant physical effort exerted by the players last Tuesday, and the condition of both Kounde and Balde, Flick noted that the players gave their utmost. He said: "They gave more than 100%, and that's fantastic. The fans left happy, and also disappointed, but they saw a great team, and that's wonderful."
Regarding Pedri's condition, who continued to play despite Flick's intention to substitute him, Flick expressed his relief that nothing bad happened to the player. He stated: "We needed Pedri on the pitch, and we risked playing him. Nothing happened, and he is fine."
