Prestianni Returns to Benfica Action Amid Fan Welcome Following Racism Allegations
Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni returned to official competition during the match against Gil Vicente in the 24th round of the Portuguese League. This return comes approximately two weeks after he was accused of directing racist insults at both Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappé during a Champions League playoff match.
The player started the game and received a warm reception from the fans, who applauded him when he was substituted in the 69th minute. He also received encouragement upon the team bus's arrival at the stadium. Meanwhile, UEFA's disciplinary proceedings continue regarding the incident, which dates back to the first leg against Real Madrid on February 17, where Vinicius Junior alleged verbal abuse from Prestianni.
Prestianni denied all accusations against him via his personal Instagram account, stating that his opponent misunderstood the words heard during the match, which saw French referee François Letexier temporarily stop play. The continental federation had previously suspended the player for one match, causing him to miss the second leg of the European playoff.
Ahead of the match, Portuguese coach José Mourinho emphasized the importance of respecting the principle of presumption of innocence. However, he noted that his position regarding the player could change entirely if Prestianni is officially convicted by the competent authorities in the future.
