Spanish Prosecutor Seeks Prison for Real Oviedo Fan Over Racist Abuse Against Rashford
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Spain's Asturias region has requested a 15-month prison sentence for a Real Oviedo fan. This request comes after the fan's involvement in directing racist insults at international player Marcus Rashford of Barcelona. The prosecution's demands also include a fine of 2,880 euros, in addition to 2,000 euros in compensation for the player, as part of the ongoing investigations into the incident that occurred at the Carlos Tartiere stadium.
The details of the incident trace back to a match between Real Oviedo and Barcelona on September 25 last year. During this game, the 19-year-old fan targeted the player with offensive remarks as he prepared to take a corner kick. Cameras captured these actions, and the footage was subsequently shared across social media platforms, garnering nearly 29 million views. This widespread exposure strengthened the evidence presented to the Investigating Court in Oviedo, which is currently awaiting the scheduling of a trial date.
These judicial actions are part of broader efforts by Spanish authorities to combat racist behavior in sports stadiums. In a related development, the Public Prosecutor's Office in Asturias recently sought a one-year prison sentence for another Real Oviedo supporter. This individual was accused of directing insults at Real Madrid player Kylian Mbappé during a match held on August 24 last year.
