Todd Boehly Reveals True Motives Behind Chelsea's Marc Cucurella Signing
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has revealed the true motivations behind the club's €68 million signing of Marc Cucurella in the summer of 2022. Boehly admitted that his primary desire to finalize the deal, which tied the player to a contract until 2028, was to prevent him from joining Manchester City. This occurred during a period of significant administrative upheaval within the London club, which was undergoing a complete change in ownership.
Boehly explained that he was forced to act as interim sporting director following the Clearlake Capital consortium's acquisition of the club from Roman Abramovich, acknowledging his lack of sufficient experience in player evaluation at the time. Todd Boehly stated: “Finding the right players the first time in anything is complicated, so you make mistakes, and obviously, coming in under the circumstances we did, almost the entire management team had left.” He added in another context: “I was stuck being the interim sporting director that summer, without having any idea what makes a good footballer good,” which explains the nature of the decisions made during that period.
Discussing the transfer strategy during that period, the co-owner affirmed that competition with Manchester City was the primary driver for the Spanish player's deal. He declared: “I knew Manchester City wanted Marc Cucurella, and if they wanted him, then I wanted him too. It was that simple.” Boehly described his first summer at Stamford Bridge as chaotic, attributing it to the departure of the entire management staff immediately after he took charge, which led to errors in judgment and evaluation.
It is worth noting that the deal for the player arriving from Brighton was the most expensive in Chelsea's history at the time, before Boehly sanctioned a series of subsequent signings including Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly. While Behdad Eghbali currently serves as the principal investor in the London club, Boehly's recent admission remains testament to the challenges the new management faced in understanding the demands of the Premier League and how to build a competitive team under exceptional circumstances.
