Guardiola Criticizes Leeds Fans' Booing Over Iftar Break: "Respect Religions, Respect Diversity"
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed his regret over Leeds United fans' booing after a temporary stoppage in the match to allow fasting players to break their fast. The incident occurred during the two teams' encounter in the 28th round of the English Premier League.
In his statements to the BBC, Guardiola emphasized that the decision to stop the game was not made by his club but came according to directives from the Premier League. He stated: "Respect religions, respect diversity, that's the point! This is the law. We didn't do it, the Premier League said: 'Okay, you can delay a minute or two for those who are fasting, do it for the players.' This is the reality (referring to the fans' booing)... Unfortunately."
The Spanish coach also clarified that some of his players needed to break their fast during the match, adding: "They took some vitamins in the first half against Leeds, because Rayan Cherki and Rayan Aït Nouri did not eat today."
Concluding his remarks, the Manchester City manager affirmed that appreciating religious beliefs and respecting cultural diversity in stadiums reinforces a honorable image of football, noting that these measures reflect the values of respect and cooperation among everyone within the game.
It is worth noting that Manchester City secured a difficult 1-0 victory over Leeds United, with Antoine Semenyo scoring in the 45+2 minute. This win raised the team's tally to 59 points, continuing their pursuit of leaders Arsenal, who have 61 points and are set to face Chelsea tomorrow in an anticipated clash.
