Vladimír Darida Returns from International Retirement to Aid Czech Republic's World Cup Bid
Former Czech Republic captain Vladimír Darida has announced his reversal of international retirement, aiming to assist the national team in their efforts to qualify for the upcoming World Cup finals. This decision, announced on Tuesday, followed negotiations between the 33-year-old playmaker and coach Miroslav Koubek, along with Czech Football Association General Manager Pavel Nedvěd.
Darida had previously ended his international career in 2021 after the Czech Republic's elimination from the quarter-finals of the European Championship. However, the challenges of the World Cup playoff pushed the coaching staff to recall the playmaker. The Czech national team is set to face Ireland in a single-leg knockout match on home soil on March 26, as the team seeks to return to the global stage, which they have been absent from since 2006.
Darida affirmed his commitment to this national mission, stating, “We will do our utmost together to bring Czech football back to the World Cup.” The national team is looking to overcome the playoff hurdle after finishing second in their group behind Croatia. The current Hradec Králové player has earned 76 international caps since his debut in 2012, scoring eight goals, making him a valuable addition to coach Koubek's plans.
