Sheffield Wednesday Suffer Earliest Relegation in English Football History with 13 Games Remaining in Championship Season!
Sheffield Wednesday have officially been relegated to England's League One following their 2-1 defeat to fierce rivals Sheffield United on Sunday, in a match from the 33rd round of the Championship.
This relegation marks Sheffield Wednesday as the first team in English league history to have their drop confirmed as early as February. Occupying the bottom spot in the league table with 13 full matches remaining, they have set an unprecedented record for the earliest relegation in the league's history.
The team has been plagued by a severe financial crisis since the start of the season, which saw 18 points deducted from their tally due to issues with salary payments and financial obligations. This made relegation inevitable, and following their loss to Sheffield United, they now trail the nearest safe team by 41 points, with only 39 points left to play for.
The home side took an early two-goal lead through Patrick Bamford and Harrison Burrows. Calvin Phillips was sent off at the start of the second half, before Gabriel Otegbayo received a red card in the final minute. Charlie McNeill scored to reduce the deficit, but Wednesday's attempts to equalize proved unsuccessful.
This season concludes Sheffield Wednesday's three consecutive years in the Championship, marking an extremely difficult campaign both technically and administratively.
