
Newcastle Rout Qarabag 6-1 in Champions League, All but Secure Round of 16 Spot
English side Newcastle United secured a comfortable 6-1 away victory over hosts Qarabag in Azerbaijan, in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League playoff tie, moving them closer to the round of 16.
Newcastle quickly converted their dominance into goals, with Anthony Gordon opening the scoring in the 3rd minute. Defender Malick Thiaw then doubled their lead in the 8th minute.
Gordon continued his prolific performance, completing a quadruple with three more goals before halftime (32nd minute penalty, 33rd minute, and another penalty in the 45+1st minute).
In the second half, the hosts managed to pull one back through Elvin Jafarguliyev in the 54th minute. However, Jacob Murphy restored Newcastle's six-goal advantage in the 72nd minute, marking his first goal in the Champions League.
This commanding victory means Newcastle have all but secured their place in the round of 16, with the return leg scheduled for next Tuesday at 20:00 GMT+1 at St. James' Park.
