Al Ahly Fan Unrest Continues: Bottle-Throwing Incident Delays FAR Rabat Team
The CAF Champions League group stage match between Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Morocco's AS FAR, held at Cairo International Stadium for the sixth and final round, was marred by unfortunate incidents that occurred before, during, and after the final whistle.
Initially, AS FAR supporters were subjected to projectile throwing by some fans of the host team. Video footage obtained by "Albotola" later showed some security personnel also directing projectiles towards the stands designated for the Moroccan club's fans, as the supporters attempted to defend themselves against the assault.
The disturbances were not confined to the stands; the pitch itself witnessed tension. AS FAR players were pelted with bottles, resulting in an injury to Ahmed Hamoudan's hand.
The assaults continued even after the match concluded, with AS FAR players receiving the same treatment as they attempted to leave the field, facing a barrage of bottles.
Consequently, the Moroccan club's delegation was forced to wait for the Egyptian fans to clear the stands before they could head to their dressing room amidst a charged atmosphere.
Despite these incidents, the match ended in a goalless draw. This result secured Al Ahly the top spot in the group, while AS FAR finished second, with both teams progressing to the quarterfinals of the continental competition.
