Mbappe Downs Villarreal, Leads Real Madrid to La Liga Summit

Real Madrid temporarily moved to the top of the Spanish La Liga table after securing a crucial 2-0 away victory against Villarreal on Saturday evening, in a match part of the 21st round of the competition.

The Royal Club sealed the win thanks to the brilliance of its French star, Kylian Mbappe, who scored both goals in the second half. He opened the scoring in the 47th minute, before extending the lead with a second goal in stoppage time (90+4') from a penalty kick, which he himself earned and executed in a 'Panenka' style.

With this victory, Real Madrid raised its tally to 51 points at the top of the standings, two points ahead of its direct pursuer, Barcelona, who will host Real Oviedo on Sunday (16:15 GMT+1).

On the other hand, Villarreal's points tally remained at 41 points in fourth place, level on points with third-placed Atlético Madrid, who will face Real Mallorca on Sunday evening.
