Senegal's Consul General in Morocco: "Morocco-Senegal Relations Too Deep to Be Affected by Sporting Events"
El Hadj Momar Anta Cissé, Senegal's Consul General in Morocco, called for calm and restraint following the events that transpired after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. He affirmed that the situation is under control and that information circulated on some digital platforms does not necessarily reflect the reality on the ground.
In a video statement, the Senegalese diplomatic official said, "This is not the time to ignite tension or exaggerate events; instead, we must exercise responsibility and calm." He stressed the importance of not being swayed by unverified news rapidly spreading on social media.
The Consul also extended his gratitude to the Kingdom of Morocco and King Mohammed VI for "the excellent organization and exceptional hospitality during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations." Simultaneously, he cautioned against sharing images and messages that "do not reflect reality and are not related to Morocco."
Cissé added that his services are monitoring the situation in direct coordination with Moroccan authorities, explaining, "We are in constant communication with local authorities, and all procedures are being carried out within the framework of the law and in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect."
The spokesperson warned against the danger of rumors, asserting that a significant portion of what is being circulated lacks accuracy. He stated, "We urge the Senegalese community and all followers to be cautious of misleading information published without verifying its sources. Several individuals are impersonating Senegalese nationals on social media and spreading messages of hatred."
The Senegalese Consul also emphasized the strength of relations between Rabat and Dakar, stating that what occurred during a football match should not affect the historical ties between the two countries. He added, "The relations between Morocco and Senegal are greater and deeper than to be affected by temporary sporting events."
These statements come in the context of the controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations final, which saw a threat of withdrawal after a penalty was awarded to the Moroccan national team. Diplomatic authorities intervened to contain the situation and call for de-escalation, preventing any tension from escalating beyond the sporting realm.
