Moroccan Federation to Pursue Legal Action Over Senegal's Final Walkout and Penalty Incident
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announced late Sunday its intention to pursue legal action with both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA, following the Senegalese national team's walkout from the pitch during the Africa Cup of Nations final against the Moroccan national team.
In an official statement, the Federation clarified that the decision to resort to legal procedures stems from the events that accompanied the referee's announcement of a penalty kick, which was deemed correct by all specialists, and the subsequent actions that directly affected the normal course of the match and the performance of the national team players.
The FRMF statement read: “The Royal Moroccan Football Federation announces that it will pursue legal procedures with the Confederation of African Football and the International Football Federation to address the Senegalese national team's walkout from the final match against the Moroccan national team, and the accompanying incidents after the referee announced a penalty kick, which was unanimously deemed correct by specialists. This significantly affected the normal course of the match and the performance of the players.”
The FRMF also extended its sincere thanks to all Moroccan fans for their massive presence and exemplary support throughout the national team's matches and other games. The Federation also thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the continental tournament.
The Africa Cup of Nations final saw the Senegalese national team claim the title after defeating Morocco one goal to nil. The match was marred by refereeing and organizational incidents that sparked widespread controversy.
