Morocco Leads Nigeria 3-2 in AFCON Head-to-Head Ahead of Tomorrow's Semifinal
The Moroccan national team is preparing to face its Nigerian counterpart in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. This historic encounter will be the sixth between the two teams in the continental tournament. Statistics show that all five previous clashes between the two sides in AFCON have ended with a decisive winner, with no draws.
Tomorrow's match marks the first encounter between Morocco and Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations in 22 years, and only the second time they will meet in the competition's semi-final stage. Four of the five previous encounters between the two teams took place in the group stage, in 1976 (two matches), 2000, and 2004.
The first clashes between the two teams in the tournament were in 1976, during the group stage, where Morocco won both matches with scores of 3-1 and 2-1. These victories were part of their journey to securing their first and only AFCON title in the tournament's history.
The second semi-final clash between the two sides was in 1980, when Nigeria secured a 1-0 victory with a goal scored by Felix Owolabi in the ninth minute, leading the team to their first continental title.
The two teams met again in the group stage in 2000, where Nigeria eliminated Morocco with a 2-0 victory, courtesy of goals from Finidi George and Julius Aghahowa. Their last encounter in the tournament was in 2004, when Morocco won 1-0 in their opening match of Group D, with Youssef Hadji scoring the sole goal in the 77th minute.
The Moroccan national team will face its Nigerian counterpart tomorrow, Wednesday, at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off scheduled for 9:00 PM (GMT+1).
