Regragui Explains Player Media Reluctance, Citing Language Barriers and Criticism
Walid Regragui, coach of the Moroccan national team, affirmed his understanding of media criticism, emphasizing that communication with journalists is subject to various considerations related to the players and their circumstances.
Speaking at a press conference, Regragui stated, “We accept criticism. The players are of a high caliber, and we put in significant effort to ensure their presence in the mixed zone, but no player can be forced to speak.”
He added, “While three players are obligated to speak to the media, the rest’s availability depends on their psychological state. Nevertheless, we understand that journalists require players’ opinions.”
Regragui further elaborated, “In every country, some players enjoy speaking to the media, while others do not. Some face language barriers; for instance, some speak Darija only to be ridiculed, leading them to refuse to speak it again.”
He continued, “These issues are linked to the team’s development, and we, along with the media unit, strive to provide as much information as possible to prevent frustration.”
He concluded, “Sometimes a player’s technical performance can negatively impact their psychological state, rendering them unable to speak. It’s unreasonable to criticize a player throughout the season and then demand a statement from them; this situation needs to be understood.”
