Saudi Arabia Offers $1 Billion in Concessional Loans to FIFA for Developing Nation Stadiums
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced the signing of a new strategic partnership with the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD). This initiative aims to finance football infrastructure projects in several developing countries, a move that strengthens Saudi Arabia's growing presence within the global sports system.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) stipulates the provision of concessional loans, potentially reaching up to $1 billion. These funds are earmarked for the construction or renovation of FIFA-approved stadiums, as well as equipping surrounding facilities and developing multi-purpose sports venues that adhere to international standards.
According to details reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, priority for this funding will be given to countries suffering from a lack of sports infrastructure. The goal is to enable these nations to host regional and international competitions and enhance the role of sports in social development.
This step comes at a time when FIFA emphasizes that many national federations lack sufficient resources to build modern stadiums, making the need for external support more urgent. This is particularly true for major projects that exceed the capabilities of FIFA's usual "FIFA Forward" programs.
