De la Fuente on Yamal's Exclusion from Spain Squad: "I've Never Experienced a Situation Like This!"
Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente expressed his surprise at the exclusion of player Lamine Yamal from the squad, following a medical report sent by Barcelona confirming the player requires 7 to 10 days of rest.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Tuesday morning Yamal's withdrawal from the World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey. The RFEF clarified its position in an official statement, revealing its displeasure and surprise at the situation and how events unfolded.
In his first comments on the incident during an interview with "RNE" radio, coach Luis de la Fuente also expressed his surprise, stating: "There are procedures that happen outside the Federation's scope, and this is what happens and must be accepted. I have never experienced a situation like this, and I don't think it's very normal."
De la Fuente continued: "It surprised us all. When you don't receive news or know any details, especially concerning a health matter, one feels astonished."
