The Iranian Football Federation has submitted an official request to FIFA, seeking permission for the Iranian national team players to wear black armbands during their upcoming World Cup group stage match against the Egyptian national team.
According to Iran's Tasnim news agency, this request coincides with the commemoration of Ashura. The players aim to observe the occasion by wearing black armbands during the match, which is scheduled for June 27.
The same source added that the Iranian Federation officially informed FIFA of its desire to implement this initiative, which coincides with the commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein bin Ali on the tenth of Muharram. They are awaiting final approval before the match date.
In a related development, the Iraqi Football Federation had also submitted a similar request, asking for permission for the Iraqi national team to wear black shirts or armbands during their match against Senegal, which is scheduled for the same day.
