Basque Institutions Inform FIFA of Joint 2030 World Cup Hosting Plan Across Two Stadiums
Official institutions in Spain's Basque Country have formally informed FIFA of their continued pursuit to participate in hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup finals, proposing an innovative organizational model that combines the cities of Bilbao and San Sebastián.
This initiative, involving the municipal councils of both cities, the regional government, and football clubs Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad, aims to present a joint bid under the name 'Single Basque Headquarters' to ensure the required logistical and sporting readiness.
The submitted proposal is based on using the San Mamés stadium in Bilbao and the Anoeta stadium in San Sebastián to host group stage matches. The organizing bodies plan to present a unified budget for this hosting, rather than separate budgets. The program includes distributing four group stage matches equally between the two stadiums, with two matches allocated to each. This decision follows a series of consultations and technical preparations to ensure compliance with international standards.
In a joint statement, the Basque institutions and the two clubs affirmed that the step was taken based on "appropriate studies and analyses in accordance with the organization's requirements and with the public interest and the country's perspective in decision-making," signaling a desire to unify regional efforts to maximize the benefits from the global event.
These entities had previously engaged in the preliminary process before officially announcing the joint coordination formula on Monday, which aims to strengthen the region's position within Spain's overall hosting bid.
In a related context, this strategic direction by the provincial councils of Biscay and Gipuzkoa represents a step towards integrating financial resources and sports infrastructure. Through this coordination, local Spanish authorities seek to present a comprehensive technical bid that reduces operational costs and increases organizational efficiency, as part of the extensive preparations Spain is undertaking in cooperation with Morocco and Portugal to host the global tournament.
